Houzz conducted a study, late last year, surveying over 1,700 people in different stages of kitchen renovations. The study focused on design trends, layouts and storage solutions. The answers give us a little preview of what is upcoming in popularity for kitchens in the U.S.

L Shaped Kitchens

This was an interesting turn of events! In the study, over 50% of the homeowners were planning on changing the layout of their kitchens entirely. Of those 50%, about 35% of these homeowners were planning to go with an L shaped layout. What is more surprising, is that just two years ago, U shaped kitchens were the most sought after.

Open Concept

Another noticeable trend was opening up the kitchen to other living spaces. While this isn’t much of a surprise, over 50% of the homeowners surveyed were planning on switching to an open concept design.

Bringing in the outdoors

In addition to open concept, making the kitchen more accessible to the outdoors was a top priority in many renovation plans. 18% of homeowners planned their renovation to include outdoor access. Adding double doors was the most common approach, but a single door/sliding door was included in many renovation plans.

Functionality

In the survey, virtually every homeowner expressed function was a huge priority in their renovation. A massive 63% stated their kitchen should be renovated in a way that makes finding and storing items easier. With such a large percentage, it isn’t surprising that most people opted for built in storage. In addition, 67% of people incorporated a pull-out waste and/or recycling bin.

Style

While function, location, and work triangles are extremely important for a kitchen, how it looks is also a key aspect to a kitchen renovation. 60% of people interviewed stated that style was up on their list, and 47% of people were less worried about the style, and just wanted to make sure it fit with the rest of the home.
