Add Joy to the Kitchen

Does your home and kitchen feel boring or lack a positive vibe? High-tech and modern amenities can leave your home feeling fairly austere. The wrong colors and furnishings can make the heart of the home somewhat of a bummer. Is this sound familiar? Don’t worry! Here are a few tips to bring back those feel-good vibes to your home.

Include natural finishes

Modern finishes can be enticing because they’re easy to clean. However, a lot of metal, flat surfaces, and high sheen can make your kitchen feel cold. Adding natural materials such as ceramics, woods and/or woven baskets into the kitchen area will make all the difference.

It may be as simple as a wooden knife block, a bamboo cutting board, or some wooden crock pot spoons. Add a wicker tray to hold all your frequently used spices and a few ceramic containers with wooden tops to store your more bulk spices may be the exact touch you need.

Set the tone with color

Color is extremely important with every section of the home. The kitchen especially is a place where a lot of stress and multitasking can happen, so try keeping the space serene. Yellows, pale greens, white, and pastels are the key to keeping the space feeling warm and comforting. As a nice contrast to the bold, stainless steel, appliances, these colors and tones will keep the space feeling positive.

Grow Something

Back to the “natural elements”, plants make a space feel warm and lived in. There are many options of ways to grow and display herbs (my personal favorite because the plants are functional). The vertical herb gardens are my particular favorite. Not only are they in style right now, they are a great way to be a decoration for those who struggle to fill wall space. Keep it round

This may sound odd, but opting for round furniture creates a more cozy environment. The cabinets, counters, doorways and everything else is already square. Adding even more harsh corners can make a space feel aggressive. Adding round bar stools or a round dining room table will soften up the space.

And last but not least, keep it fun

Laughter is the key to bringing joy into the home. Adding your children’s drawings, or a certificate from work onto the fridge can be a great way to bring your smile into the kitchen. A smile can brighten a room more than any paint color or finish. Bring in items that make you happy and have positive memories attached.
